Nursing Practice Act
The Nursing Practice Act (NPA) authorizes the Board of Registered Nursing to define the legal boundaries of professional nursing practice in the state of California. It defines what is considered within and outside the scope of practice for the Registered Nurse as well as what elements of care a Registered Nurse may choose to delegate. The NPA articulates that the Registered Nurse maintains the ultimate authority and accountability for the patient’s care. The NPA is broad and defines a wide variety of practice issues including but not limited to: • Requirements for initial and ongoing RN licensure • The role of the RN in administering medication • The role of the Advanced Practice Nurse The complete California Nurse Practice Act can be located on the California Board of Registered Nursing website.
